Scotty & Princess in New Town, North Dakota

The folks at the Mpls Photo Center continue an impressive string of group shows with the “Where In The World” exhibition. This show features images by dozens of photographers from across the United States. The show juror was Toby Kamps of The Menil Collection in Houston.

I’m pleased to share that my photograph of “Scotty & Princess” [above] is among those in the exhibit. This photograph was made last March in New Town, N.D., while I was on assignment for an editorial client. This is the second time in recent months that I’ve exhibited in Minneapolis as part of a juried show. [More details are here.]

The opening reception for “Where In The World” is set for tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. I’ll be there and can’t wait to see the entire show. Best, Ann

P.S. If you don’t happen to be in Minneapolis tonight, feel free to stop by to check out “Where In The World” anytime before Nov. 27.

(Dis)covering the Veil: Visible and Invisible Spaces

Thanks to a colleague’s recommendation I stopped by Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., on Tuesday to attend an exhibit and related talk.

“[Dis]covering the Veil: Visible and Invisible Space,” curated by Jennifer Heath, is challenging, delightful, humorous and somber all rolled into one. The exhibit features the work of three dozen visual artists. It’s not just about veils in a literal sense, but also about the historical practice or act of covering. Two days later I’m still considering the exhibit and Heath’s presentation. I didn’t intend to photograph at the exhibit, but I was drawn to the piece above and how one young woman responded to it. I’m sorry to say I don’t have the artist’s name readily available.

“[Dis]covering the Veil: Visible and Invisible Space” remains on display until Sunday, Sept. 25. For more information on this exhibit, a larger exhibition connected to it or Heath’s work, visit www.TheVeilBook.com.

Best, Ann

Parallels: A Curious Pairing of PhotographsParallels: A Curious Pairing of PhotographsParallels: A Curious Pairing of Photographs

I am excited to announce that on Thursday [Aug. 4] there will be a opening reception for my exhibition Parallels: A Curious Pairing of Photographs by Ann Arbor Miller and Britta Trygstad. As the title suggests, the exhibition is a collaboration between myself and the fabulous Britta Trygstad.

We started working on this collection of photographs last July. Parallels features 18 photographs [nine by each artist] and is sure to delight viewers. The opening reception is set for 6 to 9 p.m. at DK Custom Framing @ Gallery 14 in downtown Fargo. If you can’t make it Thursday night, the exhibition will be up until the end of August.

"Kathy's Tulips" on display at Nichole's in downtown Fargo

A strip of earth rests between our driveway and my neighbor’s home. Each spring this bit of earth gives way to a row of tulips. Each summer colorful annuals fill the narrow void. Autumn brings fallen leaves. Winter’s snow, of course, creates a white blanket. “Kathy’s Tulips” celebrates the earth’s ability to produce in small spaces.

I submitted a variation of the above photograph printed on canvas for “Earth, Air, Fire, Water” – the theme of this year’s A Woman’s Perspective exhibit. Excerpts from the exhibit remain on display through May 21. A public reception is set for this Thursday [April 19] from 4 to 6 p.m. at Nichole’s Fine Pastry in downtown Fargo. Go for the art. Go for the food. Go for the adventure. [To view "Kathy's Tulips" you will need to visit the women's loo. Seriously.]

“Kathy’s Tulips” also documents a scene that has greeted me – in one form or another – for the better part of eight years. Our family has enjoyed a great house in a fabulous neighborhood with amazing neighbors. However, we’ve decided to make a change and will relocate to a new home in Fargo’s Clara Barton neighborhood in the very near future. I’m excited to have more space and three toilets as well as a dedicated creative space at home.

Here’s to new adventures! – Ann

Like Mother, Like Daughter

It isn’t very often that I enter juried photography exhibits. In fact, I can’t think of a single exhibition I’ve entered outside the Red River Valley.

However, I seem to be all about doing things I’ve never done before. I thought it was a trend, but I think it might have morphed into a way of life. Or something like that.

The photography community in the Midwest has a fabulous resource in the Mpls Photo Center. The organization seeks to make a difference in photography by encouraging photographers to meet, socialize, learn, grow, create and exhibit. The only thing I don’t like about the Mpls Photo Center is that they are located in Minneapolis, which is four hours [or so] from Fargo. That said, I’m grateful for the center’s existence.

I’m also grateful to be participating in a fabulous group show at the center with other women photographers. My photograph [above] “Like Mother, Like Daughter” will be exhibited as part of “Woman As Photographer: Documenting Life As A Woman,” which opens one week from today. I’m planning to attend an evening reception, which runs from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 11, and not just because they promised great food and music. [The exhibit closes on April 17 so there is plenty of time to check it out, if you happen to be in the Twin Cities.] The exhibit was curated by Christina Chang, assistant curator at the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, and is featured in the current issue of the Mpls St. Paul Magazine.

The young girl featured in “Like Mother, Like Daughter” skipped an afternoon nap to join her mother, grandmother, aunts and other women for an outing to a nail salon as part of wedding day preparations. I also photographed the wedding, which was a lovely backyard affair that was held the following day.

Happy Friday! – Ann

P.S. I stand corrected. I just remembered I had two photographs exhibited in 2009 as part of the Women in Photojournalism conference exhibition at the Las Vegas Flamingo Hotel.
