Accident on Fargo's Main Avenue

Life on both the home and work fronts has been generally super busy. Entries here have been far and few between for many months. I’ve lost count. Sometimes I get in the habit of just going. You know the kind of going that takes a person from one task to the next without pause.

Well, this afternoon a big old pause popped up right in front of my new office and studio space in Fargo’s SoMA District [South of Main Avenue]. A silver SUV flipped over in the east bound lane of Main Avenue not far from my door. The driver’s vehicle went up on the curb, hit a tree and flipped, according to bystanders. He was conscious at the scene and taken to a local hospital. After hearing a bit of a commotion, I’d grabbed both my cell phone and 5D classic on my way to find out what was going on. Photographing as firefighters freed the man seemed like the natural thing to do – although I’m not sure what purpose the resulting pictures serve. The experience reminded me how quickly life can change and how everything can come to an abrupt stop. I’m off to collect my son from school, planning to drive carefully and intent on taking pause.

Thanks for looking and I’ll be back soon. – Ann

It’s a new exhibit for a New Year!

“On The Farm & In The Garden” is now on the walls of Green Market Kitchen in downtown Fargo, N.D. The exhibition features 10 color diptychs from a small farm near Shelly, Minn. A public opening reception is set for Tuesday, Jan. 8 [yes, that would be tomorrow!] from 6 to 8 p.m. The folks over at ArtsPulse pulled together a nice write-up about the show. You can read it the digital version by clicking here. Also, I’ve shared a bit about my process, purpose and intent via previous journal posts [Part I and Part II].

While I don’t recommend hanging two shows within less than six weeks of each other, it does feel like 2013 is off to a great start. Commons, a collaborative effort with Britta Trygstad that presents photographic pairs in curious combination, remains on display at The Spirit Room until Jan. 11. In the meantime, there is ample time to take in the photographs at Green Market since that show will be up until March 31.

Commons: A Curious Pairing of Photographs by Ann Arbor Miller and Britta Trygstad

A new series of work by Britta Trygstad and myself will be on display at The Spirit Room in downtown Fargo for the next six weeks. Similar to its predecessor Parallels, Commons presents photographic pairs in curious combinations. My collaborator describes the photographs as modern, organic and simple. That works for me.

Tonight is the opening reception and we’d love to see as many people as possible. Event starts at 6:30 p.m. with a brief talk and Q&A at 7:30 p.m. The Spirit Room is located in the heart of downtown Fargo on Broadway. If you can’t make the reception – or even if you can – read up on our collaborative process and the creation of Commons in a recent story on the ArtsPulse blog.

Hope to see you tonight. – Ann

Photograph of northern leopard frog in North Dakota

I’ve never given much thought to photographing the northern leopard frog or really any variety of frog. That was before a recent assignment with Minnesota Public Radio News. I recently spent a short time photographing the northern leopard frog near Mantador, N.D., and was absolutely taken with these creatures [and mighty thankful for my macro]. They were a hoot to photograph. Working in concert with a radio reporter requires I’m more quiet than usual. I was so delighted with the frogs and their unpredictable jumps that I was giggling. It was silly, but oh so entertaining. The audio version of the story and more photographs are online here.

Benefitting Bras On Broadway 2012

The 7th annual Bras On Broadway benefit event is just around the corner. Well, not really as the actual event won’t be held until Oct. 25. But, the call for wearable and non-wearable art donations just came out a few weeks ago.

I’m please to report I already have my photograph [the non-wearable kind] in hand – or on my hard drives. Here’s a look at what I came up with in 2010 and 2011. It’s important to me to create a new image for this event each year. While event organizers have relaxed guidelines, historically the focus had been on the artistic reinvention of the bra – or breast. Anyway, I just ordered a copy of the above photograph, which was shot on a muggy June evening along Interstate 94 as I was driving home from photographing a lovely wedding in Minnesota’s lakes country. I’m printing the photograph on metal and am excited to try something different in terms of presentation.

If anyone has a title suggestion I’m open to hearing it. I have handful of working titles [including “Twin Peaks” and “Summer Evening With The Girls”], but am not sold on any of them. Feel free to share keywords or a complete title if something springs to mind.

Thanks for looking, Ann
