Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Here’s a look at a few scenes from the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build site in Moorhead, Minn., Friday morning.

Cast members Paul DiMeo [above] and Eduardo Xol [below] visited with spectators during breaks in filming. Special guest Aaron Bilven of Minot, N.D., was on hand to celebrate his 19th birthday. Aaron’s family experienced an Extreme Makeover: Home Edition four years ago. He’s the guy with the super big smile below.

Work continues at a steady clip and the number of spectators appears to be growing. Enjoy! Ann

Photographing the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build site in Moorhead, Minn., comes with a unique set of challenges. Construction is going on around the clock. There are also lots of folks around the build site. People are always doing something. It could be working, watching, filming, relaxing or just catching up with the rest of the world via cell phone or Internet. All of these things are fantastic – especially when you want to document what’s going on with a camera.

That said, the site and surrounding areas are visually overwhelming. The house itself is constantly changing and it would be easy to just keep photographing the structure over and over again. But, that really isn’t necessary. There is a live feed of the construction site and lots of folk photographing [and filming] the house. When I visited the site earlier today I really tried to focus my energy on two things: people and details.

If I could share one word about the workers, volunteers and project managers involved in the project, it would be passion. Everyone I’ve spoken with or observed is passionate about creating this beautiful home for Bill, Adair, Peighton and Garrett Grommesh. The family will see their new home Sunday afternoon.

That’s all for now. Ann

Wow. The folks at the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build site in Moorhead, Minn., were very busy last night. Seriously. And, the unofficial word is things are right on schedule.

It’s a great project for a great family.

Spectating and cheering is encouraged. Details are online here. More photographs from today’s effort will be posted in the Photos section of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition [Fargo-Moorhead] facebook page the later this evening.

Enjoy. Ann

I made it back to the build site for a bit earlier today. Things are definitely getting done. The foundation is in place and workers are moving on to other tasks.

It really is exciting to see progress on the house, which is being built as part of an Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project. It’s also interesting to see how the neighborhood is adjusting to the influx of equipment, trailers and people. The best places to check for frequent project updates are via facebook and on the project’s website.

I need to run, but am hoping to get back to the build site after dark. This operation is running around the clock.

Best, Ann

Work is underway to create a fabulous new home for a deserving family in Moorhead, Minn. It’s an Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project that wouldn’t be possible without the builder – Heritage Homes – or thousands of volunteers and related donations. It’s a huge community project and one I’m photographing as much as life allows.

I’ve not had the good fortune to meet Bill and Adair Grommesh or their kids, Garrett and Peighton. The family certainly has an inspirational story, which you can read about here.

Maybe it goes without saying, but there is something about people who live in the Upper Midwest. They love to come together – to fight floods, to build homes, to unite and to eat. It doesn’t really matter what the cause.

Anyway, I made it to the build site late Monday afternoon. The family’s original home was moved earlier in the day. Heavy machinery and people who know how to use it seemed very, very busy at work. There appeared to be a lot of dirt to move. For regular folk, things were a touch on the quiet side. I’m sure that won’t last long.

More photographs of the project are being posted here on a regular basis. Also, my colleague and occasional collaborator Sarah McCurdy is writing about the project on her blog.

More soon. Ann
